Pinkening of the keyboard

February 16th, 2008 | Filed under Projects, Technology.

Amy has a slightly naff keyboard, it’s a small laptop-style one with the only redeeming feature being it’s bright pink (not that I like pink you understand, but on Planet Amy, anything pink is good… no matter how bad it is ;) ) And you know, the keys stick and she gets frustrated with it so I thought I could lend a hand.

Read on to see some photos of the progress…

First I took one Microsoft Internet Keyboard, circa 1999. It was the first of their multimedia-infested keyboards, featuring special buttons to launch ‘My Computer’, ‘My Documents’ and control web browsers.

First task was to remove its innards and all the keys (a long job involving the keys pinging off into the mess on her floor), then give it a wash to remove 8 years of crusted grime.

Then, over the course of a rather nice, but cold session of burning garden waste in an old washing machine drum I sprayed it pink, or lilac, whatever that colour is supposed to be. We had a good argument in the car shop over this, much to the amusement of the shop keeper. Some random in the shop agreed with Amy that it was lilac, I still think it’s pink.

Here is the final result
