Friday 13th
June 13th, 2008 | Filed under Personal. Here’s a list of things that went wrong today:
- My alarm clock failed to connect to the Internet, so I was woken by it bleeping at me
- There was an unusual traffic jam, and I was stuck behind a cement mixer from the motorway all the way to the school gates
- I was given my form’s year 10 reports to collate, sort and write up
- My usually quiet year 9 groups had a riot for no obvious reason
- The online registration program declared ‘Friday 13 June is not a school day’ and refused to let me take the register
- I forgot to go to a friend’s house to collect something after work, and it wasn’t until 6pm that he reminded me
- I got lost going to his house
- I got lost coming home
Do I attribute these things to it being the 13th of the month and also a Friday?
No.
Here’s some things that have gone wrong on days that aren’t Friday 13th
- My car has failed to start
- Kids have sworn at me
- I’ve failed to plan a good lesson and the kids have gone nuts for no obvious reason
- My alarm’s not gone off at all and only through pure chance have I woken up
- On Wednesday I didn’t go to sleep until 1am, and then woke up at 6am the day after
- The online registration system breaks down at least once a week
So remember, ‘bad’ stuff happens all the time, it’s just that because we’ve got this superstition about Friday 13th we tune our minds to bad things happening and exclude the good things. Good things like:
- I’ve finished Amy’s birthday cake and it looks quite good
- I went to Ikea and bought some nice things
- My form were nice and quiet and sorted through their reports for me
- I found a petrol station selling petrol 2p cheaper than the one near my house
