Bread and Butter Pudding

Description

A simple dessert made from nothing but bread, milk and eggs. A great way to use up stale bread and slightly off milk.

Ingredients

  • 6 sli buttered bread
  • 1⁄2 l milk
  • 3 egg
  • 200 g mixed fruit
  • 100 g white sugar
  • 10 g brown sugar

Instructions

  • Butter all the bread, creating an even covering of butter on all slices.
  • Slice the bread into "soldiers" (inch-wide strips)
  • Into an oven proof dish create a layer of bread, putting the buttered side towards the dish
  • Add a sprinkle of sugar and a handful of fruit
  • Create another layer of buttered bread and press it down against the lower layer
  • Add more sugar and fruit
  • Repeat these layers until the bread runs out
  • Whisk together the milk and eggs and pour over the top of the bread layers
  • Press the bread down into the milk/egg mixture and leave for five minutes to soak in
  • Sprinkle brown sugar onto the top
  • Bake in a pre-heated oven at 180c until the top is golden and the bread has risen

Notes

Leave to cool slightly before serving. Can be served with custard or cream.
